Venus Kent discovered at the age of 54 that she has a talent for restoring old houses. Known as, Sista Girl with Skills, she took three years to fully restore her current residence, a 1924 Cape Cod styled home, and recently took a year restoring an 1890 Italianate Victorian.
She is an avid baker, her zucchini and carrot bread products can be found at local coffee shops throughout Cincinnati.
Ethical Issue of Interest
We asked Venus to share with us an ethical question that she is interested in. We also asked her to share a video with our readers about that issue.
She said she is interested in the question “Why Black Americans struggle with finding the American dream due to the ongoing discriminatory practices that still exist in this country.” Despite having a successful consulting business that showed 4 consecutive years of revenue growth, she was unable to secure a loan to restore her first house; being forced to use retirement savings to self-fund the entire project.

More about Venus
What are your future ambitions?
In hoping my employment with the Cincinnati Ethics Center will be my last employment before retirement I want to help solidify the Center as a trusted resource for ethical expertise and leadership for the Greater Cincinnati community. My number one priority is growing the National High School Ethics Program within area high and middle schools.
What is one thing you want to do or see change in your community or the world at large?
I want to see people of color be afforded the same rights and protections taken for granted by the white majority. |
