In January 2024, The Cincinnati Ethics Center celebrated its two-year anniversary. One of our primary goals is to provide ethics education from the wonder years to the golden years. This includes fostering ethics education to all community members, from youth to college students to working professionals and beyond. We believe in the value this education infuses into community, elevating the quality of life for everyone.
Here are some highlights:
The 2nd Annual Greater Cincinnati Regional High School Ethics Bowl saw tremendous growth in just one year; catapulting to the 6th largest regional in the United States. 44 regionals were held in 33 states this year. We grew from 5 schools, 8 teams to 14 schools and 21 teams. Our winner, St. Xavier High School, competed in the Northeastern Divisional competition, a virtual competition we also host. 12 regionals are paired by the National Ethics Bowl HQ with the winner of the 6 matches moving on to compete at the National Championships being held at UNC Chapel Hill. St. Xavier was victorious once again, so for the first time our regional will be represented at the National Competition.
Ethics and Dragons, a program that guides children through fun-filled adventures and ethical exploration via the traditional tabletop role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), is implemented in all five Cincinnati Hamilton County Public Library Regions. We have hosted various adventure writing sessions with the Ethics and Dragons team to create engaging, morally complex adventures for the youth of Cincinnati to sharpen their moral reasoning skills.
Our staff has expanded from Andy Cullison, our Executive Director, and Venus Kent, our Program Manager, to including multiple Graduate Fellows, a team of Undergraduate Interns, a fully staffed Ethics and Dragons program, and we are in the process of adding two new full-time positions to our team. It is amazing to experience the growth of The Cincinnati Ethics Center over the past two years.
The Cincinnati Ethics Center extends a sincere “Thank You” to all the Greater Cincinnati community because without you, we would not have the opportunity to grow and flourish! We look forward to all the big things to come this year and beyond.
To date Some of the primary resources that we provide are community engagement activities and workshops to numerous University of Cincinnati departments. Looking forward, we would love to expand our workshops further into community organizations such as local nonprofits.
